Europe has given Americans many great foods… hamburgers from Germany, apple pie from England, and pizza from Italy. But, what may surprise you, is that Europe is also producing some of the best baby formulas in the world. Although formula manufacturers here in the U.S. are slowly catching up to the standards set by our friends from across the Atlantic, there’s really no comparison to the level of quality European formula makers are producing.

Well, for starters, European formula manufacturers like Holle must follow the strict guidelines of the European Union (E.U.) Much like the F.D.A. here in the states, the E.U. sets standards for ingredients and formulations. However, unlike the F.D.A., the E.U. does not allow the use of fructose, carrageenan, glucose, corn syrup, rice syrup or any artificial sweeteners in the making of infant formulas.
To sweeten the formula, European formula makers instead rely on lactose and maltodextrin. Lactose is a natural sweetener that is also a great source of carbohydrates. (Lactose is the main carbohydrate found in breast milk.) Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate derived from starch and is used in small quantities to sweeten and thicken formulas like Holle and HIPP.
The European formulas we carry are made with ingredients from biodynamic farms. Biodynamic farming was one of the earliest forms of organic farming and is today, the gold standard when it comes to organic livestock and plants. Biodynamic farms don’t grow any genetically modified plants and rely only on natural fertilizers to cultivate crops. On biodynamic farms, livestock is allowed to graze freely on pastures and is not treated with any growth hormones or antibiotics.
The use of vegetable oils in infant formulas is common – vegetable oils are a necessary source of fat. However, not all vegetable oils are the same. Many of the brands of formula you’ll find on supermarket shelves are made using highly processed oils. If the plant itself is not genetically modified, the process of extracting the oil is not natural…to say the least. It’s standard for manufacturers to use chemicals like hexane and acids to create certain types of vegetable oils.

If you look on the ingredient list of most brands of conventional formula, you’ll more than likely find beta-carotene, which is a nutrient found in plants like carrots. Although beta-carotene isn’t necessarily a bad ingredient in itself, it’s the way it’s processed that makes it a questionable ingredient. Conventional formula manufacturers not only use chemicals to strip this source of vitamin A from most of its benefits, they usually use it as a preservative.
