The Organic Difference

The Organic Difference

Both the United States and Europe make organic baby food. What is the difference between the two?

When it comes to baby food, you want the best for them. Organic is best because it does not have additives and processing that comes with traditional manufacturing guidelines. Is there a big difference when you compare the two organizations?

What is Organic Baby Formula?

Organic baby formula is the same as traditional baby formula when it comes to nutrition. They each have the same calories and base ingredient (cow's milk, soy, etc.). Some organic baby formulas that are on the market may also use synthetic additives such as DHA and ARA. Organic baby formula rises above because it has less exposure to pesticides that are used in farms. Pesticides have been linked to negative effects on the environment and people's health. It can increase the risk of cancer, neurological disorders, and even reproductive problems.

Parents will choose organic baby formula so that their child is exposed to food that is grown and processed under organic guidelines established by agricultural organizations such as the USDA National Organic Program and the European Commission's Organic Farming sector. These divisions make it easier to identify foods that meet the regulations, pass inspection, and comply with the ordinances that make foods “certified organic”.

What is the Difference Between Organic Baby Formulas?

Organic baby formula has many factors in common:

  • no pesticides
  • no antibiotics or growth hormones
  • no GMOs
  • from certified farms, handlers, and processors

While baby formula manufactured in the United States may be certified organic, there are still differences to its organic counterparts in Europe.

Biodynamic Farms

Biodynamic organic farming is more than just an organic farm. It is an ecosystem of specific agricultural practices that is maintained from soil to animal. These guidelines are strict to ensure the goodness that comes from the organic certification. “Demeter quality” is one term used for farms that follow the biodynamic technique.

Organic Ingredients That are Better Than Others

Table sugar is natural, and it can be organic, but it does not mean that it is good for your baby's digestive system. While your little one is still growing and developing, you want something that their body needs. Breast milk is the perfect food for babies, and European organic baby formula manufacturers do a lot to come close to that standard.

The European Union has banned many types of sweeteners to reduce the risk of childhood obesity, even if they are identified as organic. Such ingredients include table sugar (sucrose), corn syrup, rice syrup, carrageenan, and corn syrup. Lactose is found in breast milk, and some companies like Hipp and Lebenswert will use that as an organic sweetener in their baby formula. Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate that adds a touch of sweetness while it thickens Holle's formula.

Carbon Footprints

Try and Google the major baby formula brand name along with “carbon footprint”. Do you see anything about these companies working to reduce their carbon footprint for a better world for the babies they feed?

Do the same for Hipp and Holle. These companies are working to reduce their carbon footprints, or their CO2 balance so that they can be carbon neutral. What is the benefit of choosing organic if the company is not making it a habit to reduce problems like climate change?

Conclusion

By coming to MyOrganicFormula, you are more educated about the different types of organic baby formula that is available to you. You know the benefits that organic baby formula has for your baby, but that there is something better than what is available at your corner store. Knowledge is power, and that is the organic difference.
